British Citizenship

Nationality Law and becoming British

If you have indefinite leave to remain or qualifying permanent residence, you may be eligible to apply to become a British citizen through naturalisation, subject to residence, good-character and other requirements. The number of days spent overseas may affect eligibility.

Children born in the UK to parents who did not initially have leave to remain may in some circumstances be eligible for registration as British citizens, including after a parent acquires settled status or where residence requirements are met.

Some Commonwealth citizens may also have options under the Windrush Scheme depending on their own or a parent's arrival and residence history.

Nationality law can be complex. Tamsons Legal Services can help you understand the relevant requirements and prepare an application.
